Clinton Vetoes GOP Measure to Repeal Estate Tax

President Clinton yesterday vetoed Republican-sponsored legislation that would phase out the estate tax, saying it is skewed toward the wealthy and would squander the nation's surplus. "Our party is not against reasonable estate tax relief," Clinton said, with a family farmer and a self-described wealthy American at his side. "But this bill is wrong. It is wrong on grounds of fairness. It is wrong on grounds of fiscal responsibility."
