The Revenue Commissioners are setting up a number of intelligence gathering units around the country that will monitor the affairs of wealthy individuals.
The chairman of the Commissioners, Frank Daly, speaking to the Public Accounts Committee, said that these units would be deployed around the country and they would take a more 'hands on' approach to tracing and identifying tax evaders, who generally hide behind a web of companies and complex transactions in order to avoid their tax liabilities. Mr Daly said that, in particular, the construction, property and pub sectors were notorious for tax evasion. He added that while the vast majority of people working in these industries were honest law-abiding tax payers, a few 'mavericks' still operated in these sectors. |
